Description:

Lockmetal secured and have started works on a £2 million cladding package working with Wandsworth Council and Durkan on the Castlemaine Tower project.

The full recladding works programme included; demolishing and removing existing cladding, installation of new cladding, replacement of tilt and turn windows, replacement of corridor windows and louvres.

With a demanding schedule of works, Durkan required a cladding designer, supplier and installer that would offer the ability to not only design and install the cladding package, but work closely with other package providers, such as those supplying and installing windows, to ensure that the project would be delivered on time and to the high standards required.

As this is one of the first high profile recladding projects since the Grenfell disaster, close monitoring of quality has been essential throughout the project, with inspectors attending site every few days to approve the quality of workmanship.

In order to support the project requirements for quality control, Lockmetal have been running quality assurance software throughout, which allows a QA assessment to take place at each of the pre-agreed key check points. Once each QA report is completed, it is accessible to Durkan for their review and records. The Castlemaine Tower project has been such a success that it has been awarded the Making a difference to Quality and Leadership award in January 2019, then again in October 2019.

Whilst the work is being undertaken, residents are still inhabiting the tower, so it is important that we respect them and their feelings towards the Grenfell disaster whilst the necessary works are being carried out on their homes.

The project is due to finish in spring 2020 and has been running for 12 months, during which time Lockmetal have designed and installed SFS walling, insulation, fire barriers and protective membrane and cladding.

Dan Ryder FCABE C.Build E MCIOB MAPM, Durkan’s senior project manager added:
“Working together with Lockmetal on this very challenging scheme and complex delivery strategy, required a meticulous project collaboration. I am delighted to have been able to work closely with Lockmetal design and project team, overall their expertise and contribution to the scheme has been highly valued.”
